when to switch baby bottle

There is no magic or even any rush to start weaning a baby from their bottle. Even at 5-6 months of age an infant can start to learn the coordination to drink out of a regular cup. The tongue-thrust reflex starts to diminish by their first birthday and this is when they will be able to get a better lip seal around a cup — prior to this time a sippy-cup maybe a cleaner option.

If an infant still relies on the bottle for comfort through the sucking action, they may require a different way to self-soothe. Before completely weaning from breast or bottle, make sure your infant is getting enough calories and eating a balanced diet so they are not missing out on important nutrients. One such nutrient is iron — see my post for reasons why iron is important for your infant/toddler (get link here).
