Stabalizing blood sugar levels can be helpful for a number of reasons. It can help curb unwanted cravings, and assist with achieving and maintaining your desired weight. Balancing blood sugar levels can also have an uplifting effect if you’re feeling down!
If you find yourself irritable or less upbeat than you would like, the following strategies will help keep your blood sugars stable and be sure to have a positive effect on your mood.
Protein helps slow down the absorption of sugar into your bloodstream, keeping you satisfied and happy throughout the day. Greek yogurt and walnuts are excellent choices since they contain compounds that can add to those happy feelings. Other great choices include eggs and wild salmon.
When you nourish your body with fuel, your blood sugar will stop dipping and you may find this is the key to improving on your mood! Try to avoid hunger by eating more frequent, smaller meals and healthy snacks throughout the day.
Avoid sodas and eating candy because of the severe spikes and drops they cause in your blood sugar, leaving you tired and crabby. Eating white bread and bagels has the same effect. Try to eat bread made with whole grains instead.
Adding more foods rich in soluble fiber into daily meals and snacks helps to slow down the body’s absorption of sugar, making mood swings less likely to occur. Plants are great sources of fiber. Consider eating more carrots, pears, apples and sweet potatoes.
