The best remedies remedies for teething (natural teething remedies!) aren’t the same for every baby.
Growing teeth is an important and exciting milestone. But it can come with some challenges for both babies and their parents. I know this first hand as a Mom and as a physician. In my post earlier this week, I discussed a few important things parents should know about teething. First, when babies start teething since the age and sequence of teething varies greatly between children. I also discussed teething symptoms and making sure it’s teething and not an infection (viral infections in babies or bacterial infections in babies).
Baby teething pain is terrible and can seem so much worse at night. Knowing the best remedies for teething that work can make all the difference in the world.
Once you’ve figured that out, finding what helps your baby with their discomfort really can make the days and nights a bit easier on them and you.
Here are a list of best remedies for teething, starting with natural teething remedies. I even touch on the difference between tylenol or ibuprofen for teething.
Best remedies for teething that are distractions other than toys (natural teething remedies)
- Babies are easily distracted so engaging with them can sometimes help divert them away from the pain.
- Offer cold and mushy foods like applesauce maybe helpful, especially if their appetite has decreased.
- Give them cool hard items to chew on such as teething rings, a cleaned off bone (ham or chicken), or popsicles.
Chamomile for teething, frozen teething toys, or a mix of both
- One of my favourite recommendations is frozen breastmilk ice cubes in a mesh teether.
- Freezing a portion of a face cloth using plain water or in chamomile tea can also be soothing for sore gums as chamomile has anti-inflammatory properties.
Homeopathy for teething
There are various brands of homeopathic teething tablets and tinctures that some parents find helpful including:
Tylenol or ibuprofen for teething
It can be useful to offer your child Tylenol or ibuprofen for teething if every other option has been tried first and they are still in discomfort. This can be necessary at night for everyone to get back to sleep.
Ibuprofen tends to work a bit better for pain as it also reduces the inflammation associated with teething where Tylenol only helps with the pain. Ibuprofen is also dosed less frequently reducing the amount of medication you need to give. Dosing is very important when using pain medication and is based on weight the child’s weight.
Baby drool rash treatment and prevention
If you notice a drool rash, applying a soothing gentle moisturizer or even coconut oil can help protect the skin.
We hope these tips will help you and your baby during these times.
